Protein powder during pregnancy: is it safe? | Nourish with Melanie #98

Is protein powder during pregnancy beneficial? Is it safe? I’ve looked at the research and in today’s
episode of Nourish, I’m going to answer these questions and plenty more. Stay tuned! Hi I’m Melanie McGrice a fertility and prenatal
dietitian. Shakes and protein powders are tremendously
popular these days. They’re nutritious, filling and convenient,
so it’s no wonder people love to chug one down for breakfast or after the gym… and
when you’re pregnant and exhausted, it’s no wonder you’re asking yourself if they’re a good
solution. Now the answer isn’t exactly black and white,
so listen in….. Firstly, it’s important to note that so called
‘high protein diets’ are not recommended during pregnancy. Eating plans which have too much protein and
not enough healthy fats or carbohydrates can be dangerous for your baby. So if you want to know more about these, check out my video on ketosis. But overall, usually recommended to stay away. Secondly, there is a lack of research into
the safety of amino acid supplements, so high dose amino acid supplementation is not recommended
during pregnancy. Thirdly, many protein powders contain additives
such as vitamins, sweeteners and caffeine which aren’t recommended during pregnancy,
so it’s essential that you read the label. However, one protein shake per day, if it’s
a brand that is safe and doesn’t have vitamins and minerals that will compete with your current
nutritional supplements should be fine. My recommendation would be that you double
check the brand with your prenatal dietitian, and stick to a maximum of one per day. Better still make your own protein shake with
milk, seeds, fruit and vegetables. You may like to check out some of the recipes
