NSMC Birthplace Overview

Welcome my name is Lisa Cavallaro I’m the nurse director at the North Shore Medical Center Birthplace. This online tool will let you know what to expect when you have your baby here. Our Birthplace offers complete family-focused care through labor, delivery and after you return home. Our board-certified obstetricians, anesthesiologists, experienced nurses, certified nurse midwives and neonatologists work as a team to help you through the entire labor and recovery process. Through our deep collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital, we are able to offer the most advanced care on the North Shore. I hope you enjoy this tour and discover why we are one of the most trusted names in women’s health on the North Shore. I had both of my children here at North Shore Medical Center. It was a great experience. The nurses and physicians work great as a group. From the moment you arrive at the North Shore Medical Center Birthplace, we’re ready to make things as easy and comfortable as possible for you. For your convenience, the Birthplace has a free private parking lot as well as a private entrance. You’ll be greeted by our OB admitting staff, quickly registered and given identification bands and then escorted into the Birthplace. Here at the North Shore Medical Center Birthplace, the health and safety of you and your baby is our priority. You can rest easy knowing that all visitors must enter and exit the Birthplace through a single secure doorway located at the front entrance. Only authorized staff members have security badge access. Your support person will have 24-hour access with his or her identification band. All other visitors must be cleared and escorted by our front desk staff. At the Birthplace we care about you and your pregnancy. You will receive very personal care and that is what will make your experience here special and unique. Your experience will likely begin here in the triage area, where a covering physician will monitor your labor. As it progresses you’ll be admitted into one of our five private labor and delivery suites. Every labor and delivery room is designed for your safety, comfort and support. The birthing bed is fully adjustable and free Wi-Fi internet access is available in every room. Your support person can stay right here on a pull-out chair that turns into a twin bed. We also have birthing balls and jacuzzi tubs available to make labor more comfortable. For women having c-sections, operating rooms are located inside the Birthplace. You never have to leave the unit. Your partner or support person will be assisted in preparing to go into the operating room. I really feel that the medical staff here was great. The nurses and doctors were amazing. I can’t say enough good things. They were great cheerleaders throughout the labor and delivery process and the postpartum care was amazing. We’re really lucky here at North Shore Medical Center because we take a unique approach to patient care. Every member of a patient’s team from the person who cleans the room to the nursing staff to the pediatric staff, we all work together to provide the absolute best patient experience we can. Many of our new moms opt for pain relief during labor and delivery. If you decide to have an epidural, you’ll meet with one of our on-site Mass General anesthesiologists. Many of our patients choose a natural childbirth. That is delivery without pain medication. Delivering more than a thousand babies a year our nurses, obstetricians and midwives are very experienced in managing all types of labor. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is to see the woman after she had her baby feel proud of what she’s done and to have been able to meet her wherever she was in her labor process and help give her the tools she needed to get through that and it’s interesting because for every woman it can be a completely different experience. As you experience the joy of your baby’s birth we celebrated with you and immediately help to promote bonding between mom and baby. That’s what skin-to-skin contact does and it’s the reason we’ll ask if you’d like your baby placed on your chest immediately following delivery. Skin-to-skin contact also promotes successful breastfeeding and temperature regulation for the newborn. It’s the ultimate privilege to be part of these very special moments that families are going to remember for the rest of their lives. You will have a brief recovery period in labor and delivery. Then for security your baby will receive a Hugs bracelet. This special high-tech bracelet can only be removed by nurse and helps us ensure your family’s safety until it is time to go home. After your delivery you and your baby will be taken to a private recovery suite. We know the best place for baby is to be with mom as much as possible and while the nursery is available for medical procedures or time you need to be away from the unit, we encourage you to room in with your baby whenever you can. Bonding with the baby was a very important part of the experience for us during the first hours and days of her life is a very precious time and we feel like are are able to bond with her and it was very special for us. Each recovery suite is bright and spacious with its own shower and bathroom, sleeper chair, TV and internet access and telephone. A bassinet is here for your baby to sleep in and for any travel through the hallways. When it comes time to feed your baby rest easy knowing that our certified lactation specialists are on site ready to teach you about positioning and proper latching. They also provide the emotional support and encouragement that can make all the difference in breastfeeding success. Breast pumps are also available during your stay. The babies are blessings to our families and we hope that they remain well but there are instances where they’re not and they need care locally and not have to be transferred downtown for things that we can take care of here. Should your baby arrive early and have any special or emergency needs, we are fortunate here at North Shore Medical Center to have a Level IIB Special Care Nursery, staffed by Massachusetts General Hospital physicians. Some of the common things that we see here could be premature babies born about two months early, or less so, the baby has an infection, the baby because of prematurity or infection needs support for breathing, they’re not breathing deep enough or holding their breath for example and it’s great for families to have something that is current and is comfortable. After spending a few days with us it’s time to begin your new life together at home. To leave the hospital you’ll need to have an infant car seat installed and we recommend you have comfortable clothes for you and your baby. When it’s time to go, you’ll be escorted to your car and our nurses will remind you if there is anything you need we’re here for you. Our care team is just a phone call away and is happy to answer any questions that might arise at home. I hope you’ve enjoyed this tour of the North Shore Medical Center Birthplace. All the staff at the Birthplace are focused on serving your needs during your delivery in your first days postpartum. As you prepare for the joyous day of your baby’s birth, I hope that you find comfort and know that you are in good hands with our dedicated and talented physicians, midwives, nurses and support staff.
