How to do Perineal Massage

Hi I’d like to just take a bit of time to
explain to you how to do perineal massage or perineal stretching what are the advantages
of doing it? Well, mainly stretching your labia and your perineum and enabling them
to be more elastic for when your baby is being born and as well as that when you’re doing
the practice you’re also acquainting yourself with the sensations of stretching and heaviness,
pressure, all of that stuff so that when you’re actually birthing you can say to yourself
“oh yeah, I know this, I’ve been doing this perineal massage”. So it begins, you should
start at around 34 weeks, why? Well because at 34 weeks a hormone called relaxin is produced
by your body and it starts to increase the amount that it produces after 34 weeks and
that’s going make you more elastic and stretchier. So we want to tap into that. So, here’s how
to do it: Make sure that you’ve had a wash, you’ve washed
your vulva you’ve washed your bum or do it in the shower or the bath. If you are doing
it on dry land, then make sure that you have some kind of lubricant. A basic oil like olive
oil, what I used, or you can go and get yourself some special perineal massage oil or just
some base massage oil Nothing, nothing that’s perfumed. What I used to do was put it in
a little ramekin and nuke it in the microwave for 30 seconds, just to kill off any microbes
and then here’s what you do: So I’m going to use my left hand to represent
your vagina and so obviously this vagina looks quite large and your vagina looks smaller.
Some people, and if this is you, if you’ve never looked at your vagina can you get a
mirror and go and have a look and see what your vulva looks like because, there are some
women out there who need to familiarise themselves. I think it really helps with that psycho-physical
connection and response during childbirth. When you’re ready, you take your attention
to your breath and you calm yourself and begin by just using your thumb. Put your thumb inside
your vagina upto the first knuckle and this is the perineum here. So your bum, your anus,
is here your clitoris is here, labia are there and the vagina is here and the perineum is
there. So, you put your thumb in and you stretch down to a good stretch and if you can feel
yourself clamping up against it and tensing, really work with your calm breathing to let
go of that tension, to just drop that tension away. Release the tension in your pelvic floor
because that’s what you need to be doing when you’re having a baby. Not clamming up really
tight! You need to be open and relaxed so, you take that stretch down there and then
you can work with your thumb and forefinger to kind of stretch the perineum imbetween.
So, let’s call that the 6 o’clock position. Then you come around to the 3 o’clock position
and you do the same round the labia and the up at the top, maybe just using your finger
on the inside rather than your thumb, stretch around and underneath the clitoris and then
round to the 9 o’clock position on the other side. The first 3 or 4 goes at this, you need
to do it for 5 minutes per day, the first 3 or 4 goes generally women feedback and they
say “it’s weird, I don’t like doing it”. Keep with it. Get over the weirdness and just get
on with it and make it part of your routine. Most of us have a shower or a bath each day,
there’s your time. if you feel that you’re making excuses like “oh, it’s really hard
to reach now that my bump is so big” figure out how. you could try with one hand behind
you and with one hand in front and if your partner, if you have a partner is willing
to help you, believe it or not some guys actually do it for their partner. Another thing you
could do is use both index fingers, put both index finger tips inside the vagina. Please
remember to go up the sides and fiddle around up the top, underneath the clitoris. Anything
else about that massage? That when you take it to a deep stretch, you need to learn to
breathe that tension away. So this is like value added point number 2 of doing this exercise;
that by actually acquainting yourself with the sensations of stretching and pressure
now before you go into labour, which could be anytime from 38-42+ weeks, you are rehearsing
it and we all know that you do better when you rehearse stuff.
That’s it. Any questions please post them below and I look forward to your comments.
Cheers Sophie
