Hi this is Yolanda from Vanveen bulbs dot
com. And in this segment we are going to talk about how to fertilize Day lilies. So day
lilies are a beautiful addition to your garden and they’ll grow almost anywhere with hardly
any care. And they are just really easy they just have a lot of greenery with beautiful
lilies that come up. They last only a day or two each flower but they’ll keep blooming
all summer through the fall. So they are really easy to grow and they are really easy to divide.
Cause they are just a root. So my attitude about fertilizing is the same thing as my
attitude towards our food. So we really wouldn’t need any vitamins if we ate a good diet of
vegetables and fruits and meats and cheeses and everything else. Well the same with our
plants. If we give them good compost or good potting soil they really don’t need any fertilizers.
And I haven’t fertilized my day lilies at all and they’ve done really well for me. But
if you are fertilizing them, what you should do is in the spring just give them a little
bit of nitrogen. Because that makes the greenery. In the summer through the fall you want flowers
so you don’t want to give them nitrogen you don’t want more leaves. You want the blooms
and it’s the phosphates that make the blooms. So it’s the last two numbers on the fertilizer
container that make the blooms. So you want those to be higher. So get any type of blooming
fertilizer and give them a little bit in the summer time and you’ll find that you’ll get
lots more blooms and they’ll be really lush. And every fall just add a little bit of compost
and I’ve found that with fertilizer less is more. So if you got lots of blooms and they
are doing really well and they are growing in every year, don’t fertilize them you don’t
need to. So just give them a good sunny spot with lots of drainage and you’ll find that
they do really well for many years.
