Childbirth Education Classes

(upbeat pop music) – Hi, my name’s Rebecca Chalmers, I am a Registered Nurse, I work here in the Labor and Delivery department at Saint Mark’s, and I also have the pleasure of teaching the childbirth education classes here. So the benefits of attending
a childbirth class series is basically, knowledge is power. So the more you know about what’s actually happening to your body, what’s going to be happening
during your labor process, and even what happens after, helps alleviate any
anxiety that you may have. We talk about pregnancy conditions, we talk about labor, what to expect, we break labor down into
the different phases, we talk about what happens in the hospital after you have your baby, what routines and things you can expect. We actually do a tour of the unit so parents have an idea
of where they’ll be coming to have their babies and
what that all looks like. We go upstairs and have a look at the postpartum unit as well. So I think that really helps to alleviate a lot of fears that a
lot of people may have in regards to having their baby. The Amazing Newborn class
is a brilliant new class that we’ve just been designing. Every week we have a hands-on activity, so in the first week, for example, we talk a lot about settling
and crying of the newborn baby, and it covers topics from crying, newborn settling techniques, newborn developmental
milestones, teething, anything really that newborn parents are gonna be confronted with
in those first six months of having a newborn baby. And then the other class that I teach is the Baby Steps class, which is a newborn parenting class, different to the Amazing Newborn, in that it’s where parents
come, they’re still pregnant, we talk about settling and crying, we talk about safety, what things you need to know to set up for having your baby. We’re all here because we’re passionate and love working with moms and new babies and the whole family unit, really. So that’s why I love what I get to do, and I get to see the
miracle of birth every day, which is amazing. (upbeat pop music)
